CLOTH SEAL 467527

CLOTH SEAL 467527
Description: An incomplete, large post-medieval lead cloth seal of probable 18th-century date. This two-disc seal bears a stamp on Disc 2 (Dia.: c. 29.7mm), and scratched numerals on the slightly larger and thicker Disc 1. The stamping goes over the flattened rivet head from Disc 1, through the centre of Disc 2. Within a pellet border is an inscription in two lines below a scrolled, foliate motif. The upper word, presumably a clothier's name, is unclear at the start following an old strike, but ends '...NOCK'. Below is the name of the production centre, Wakefield. The loop has broken between the discs. At 5 o'clock to the stamped face numerals have been scratched into the lower surface of Disc 1 - 3/24. A Wakefield seal has been recorded on this database, ref. LIN-293E87. Another has been published in Egan (1994, 55; ref. 109) and bears the same scratched numerals. This object has been crumpled slightly in profile. The scratching of the upright of the number '3' has cut through Disc 1 below.
