STRAP END 458706

STRAP END 458706
Description: An incomplete Middle/ Late Early Medieval (750-1050) copper alloy strap-end of Thomas' Class B Type 1 (Transverse grooved), with wedge-shaped split end and highly stylized zoomorphic terminal. It is missing the very end of the back plate. It measures 37.90mm in length, is 7.97mm wide (max) and 5.30mm wide (min). It weighs 2.4g. The split end and tapering shaft are plain, except for a transverse double-rib moulding behind the zoomorphic terminal and a roughly-executed transverse groove behind the rivet holes. The 'split' encompasses about two thirds of the strap-end. At the open end it is cut in two curves around the rivet holes 1.90mm in diameter. These are missing (broken) on the reverse plate. The zoomorphic terminal consists of a slight brow ridge to either side and a rounded snout. The patina is almost intact and only missing in a few patches. Thomas comments that this type was introduced in the latter 8th or early 9th century and remained popular until the 11th. It is widely distributed in southern and south-east England and much lest frequent north of The Wash.
