Description: Post Medieval animal (‘crotal’ or ‘rumbler’) bell. This complete example has a square suspension loop between two circular sound holes located on the upper hemisphere. There is a smaller hole located between one of the sound holes and the suspension loop. The sides of the upper hemisphere are slightly concave where the sound holes are located. The upper hemisphere is plain and undecorated. There is a worn ridge seperating the upper and lower hemispheres. The narrow sound slot of the lower hemisphere is parallel to the suspension loop, and it terminates in two circular holes. The surface of the bell is very worn, and there is a trace of incised decoration on the lower surface however the detail of the design is not clear. The spherical iron ball is still extant. The bell has a dull green-black patina with small patches of green copper corrosion. It is 42.51mm long, has a diameter of 32.08mm and weighs 42.69 grams.
