Description: From (a) John Gratwicke, the elder of Blakes in Ashurst, late of Eatons in Henfield, esq. and John Gratwicke, the younger of Arundel, esq., his only s. and Amy, his w., to (b) John Scutt of Hurstpierpoint, gent. and George Collins of Arundel, apothecary. I Manor of Eatons and Elshams in Henfield and Ashurst, capital messuage, close of land called the Wood (24a.), Coney Earth Close, with a lagg of meadow or waste ground next to the River (40a.), land called Watershill (23a. 1r.), with a lagg at the S. end of the W. side of the Bridge, Headlands Close in Ashurst, next to the Common (12a. 2r.), Three Fields Close on the S. side of Elsham in Ashurst with a lagg at the N. end (38a. 2r.), land called Elsham in Ashurst with a lagg inclosed next to the Three Closes (24a.), Warefield Close (10a.), Stoneyland Close (19a.), Stroud Close within a close adjoining called Little Marle (32a.), North Lands Close lying between Coney Earth and Wood Lagg (15a.), Harlands Close adjoining Ashurst Common to the N., Toach Crofts Close (28a.), meadow called Sugar Mead Close, abutting W. to Bine Bridge (6a.), New Mead Close (2a.), Moores Mead Close (12a.), Wood Lagg Close lying between the Wood and North Lands and abutting on the River (8a.), Ware Close divided (17a.), Elsham Mead Close lying on the N. and E. side of Elsham Close (13a.), all within the parishes of Henfield and Ashurst and now in occ. of John Gratwicke the younger, Thomas Champion and John Muzzall. II Messuage, barn, buildings, farm and lands called Blakes (40a.) in Ashurst in occ. of John Gratwicke the elder and Thomas Champion. III Messuage with several pieces of meadow and pasture belonging, part of the demesne lands of Kingsbarnes Manor, i.e. the South Greenfield and the Leefield (40a.) in Bramber and Beeding als. Seal in occ. of Thomas Champion; fields, crofts, closes, etc. part of Cradocks and Brewers farm, i.e. Hether Lene (5a.), Further Lene (7a.), Horse Croft (10a.), Calves Croft Lagg (1a), Calves Croft (5a.), Ground Lane (2a.), all which closes are in Ashurst and in occ. of Edward Wilson, clerk and William Dendy, crofts of land called the Gores in Ashurst (7a.) in occ. of William Dendy. A fine is to be levied by (a) to (b). Premises I and II are to be to the use of (b) in trust to use the rents and profits and to sell the timber thereon to pay off specified debts, subject to annuities to Jane, w. of John Gratwicke, the elder and Amy, w. of John Gratwicke, the younger, after their husbands' deaths and subject to a mortgage of Blakes made by John Gratwicke, jun. to John Charman of Midhurst. After all debts have been paid the premises are to be to the use of John Gratwicke, the younger and his heirs. Premises III are to be sold to pay off specified debts.
