Description: 1 collective petition (57 people, from South Damerham, Wiltshire) on behalf of William Cheater of Breamore, Wiltshire, 28 years, convicted at the Wiltshire Special Assizes in December 1830, for robbery [extorting ten sovereigns from William Crook (Bailiff), and involvement in rioting] on 24 November 1830, property of George Budden of South Damerham, Wiltshire. An anonymous certificate of good character. Certificate of good character from William Pearce, assistant overseer and landlord of the Bat and Ball Public House, Breamore stating that on 23 November the convict defended his cellars against the attack of the mob and remained in his house after the mob had gone before leaving quietly with a respectable tradesman. A letter from James Cheater of Charlton, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, convict's father asking for a mitigation due to his son's good character. A letter from Elizabeth Cheater of Bishopstoke, Southampton, convict's mother asking that he be allowed to visit this country for a short time in order that she may see him before he dies dated 13 December 1847. Grounds for clemency: the convicted prevented the mob from destroying much of the parish with fire; previous good character as certified by good character certificates; acted unguardedly while inebriated. Initial sentence: death, sentence commuted to transportation for life. Annotated: in New South Wales, nil. GP 47.
